Harris defeats Trump in debate: What is her strategy
US presidential candidate Kamala Harris used the debates to promote her re-election strategy. It consists of her minimal publicity, says Vladyslav Faraponov, head of the Institute of American Studies and analyst at Internews Ukraine.
“I am quite reserved in my assessment of this debate. I remember very well the assessments after the debate between Biden and Trump, where everyone had already said that Trump won the election and that Trump was already president. So I want to emphasize that everything is changing very quickly in America,” he says.
The expert notes that Joe Biden's withdrawal from the election race was unprecedented. In his opinion, these debates were important for Kamala Harris because she is still a new candidate in the race.
“So she still has that element of novelty, the element of surprise, and of course she's trying to use it. Plus, Kamala Harris's campaign has chosen a somewhat interesting strategy, and so far the polls confirm that it is working for them. This is still minimal publicity in the media. She gave only one major interview before the debate, and that was with Tim Walz, the Democratic vice presidential candidate. That is, not even one-on-one,” Faraponov adds.
According to him, the Democrat used the debate as a way to promote certain ideas that she is gradually starting to announce.
As the analyst explains, Harris's main advantage is that she can offer something new at the debates, compared to Republican Donald Trump.
“Trump, on the other hand, is a former president, an almost unopposed candidate in the Republican primaries, and he has remained so in principle. That's why it's difficult for him to offer something so new. Because then he would logically be asked where you were before or why you didn't talk about it. That is if Trump were to offer something so interesting in terms of domestic policy. That's why a lot of time was devoted to domestic policy issues: abortion, the economy, etc. These are the issues that Americans care about,” he says.
Faraponov adds that the moderators of the debate favored domestic issues that most clearly demonstrate the difference between Democrats and Republicans.
