German Chancellor Friedrich Merz assessed the prospects for ending the war in Ukraine after talks in Geneva, stating that peace "will not happen overnight", according to The Guardian.

Merz said that although the Geneva talks helped clarify certain issues, the path to ending the war remains long.

"We also know: peace in Ukraine will not happen overnight," he added.

The German Chancellor made it clear that Europe must be consulted and agree to any peace plan for Ukraine, taking into account its implications for European security.

Merz also called on Russia to take a seat at the negotiating table and play a more active role in the diplomatic process.

"It is important to us that there can be no peace plan for Ukraine if we do not give our consent to issues that affect European interests and European sovereignty," he emphasized.

Geneva talks on the peace plan

Yesterday, November 23, the first round of negotiations between the Ukrainian and US delegations took place in Geneva to coordinate a peace plan aimed at ending Russia's war.

Both sides said they had prepared an updated and refined framework document for peace.

Following the discussions in Geneva, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would make some adjustments to its peace plan.

Today, US President Donald Trump also commented on the talks, saying that something good could happen.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Ukrainian delegation will provide a full report on the Geneva negotiations regarding the plan to end the war.
