Germany hopes that the results of the elections in Hungary will allow the European Union to provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan "very quickly," Reuters reports.

The vote "means there is hope that aid for Ukraine can be released very quickly." "The German government is working towards this - it is therefore looking forward ‌with anticipation to the swift formation of a government in Hungary," a German government representative said.

Ukraine cannot receive a €90 billion loan from the European Union, as Hungary is blocking the procedural decision for transferring the funds. The Hungarian authorities have set an ultimatum to Kyiv — the money will be provided only after supplies of Russian oil to Hungary via the Druzhba pipeline are restored.

Sweden has openly stated its readiness to consider Article 7 of the Treaty on the European Union — a mechanism for depriving Hungary of voting rights. European Council President António Costa called Orbán's behavior unacceptable.

In addition, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the European Union will "one way or another" provide Ukraine with a €90 billion loan, despite Hungary's blocking.

Elections in Hungary

Magyar's Tisza party won a convincing victory in the parliamentary elections on April 12, 138 out of 199 seats in parliament. Turnout reached nearly 80% — a record for Hungary since the collapse of the socialist bloc.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán acknowledged his defeat. His support was not helped even by open backing from the White House and the Kremlin.

Today, April 13, Ukraine sent signals to Hungary regarding possible contacts at the level of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Péter Magyar.
