France and Canada demand clear commitments from Russia on peace in Ukraine – Macron

French President Emmanuel Macron stated that both France and Canada are demanding clear commitments from Russia regarding peace in Ukraine. He believes that peace must be accompanied by security guarantees, stated Macron during a meeting with Canada’s new Prime Minister, Mark Carney, BFM TV reports.
The outlet notes that Macron hosted Carney at the Élysée Palace, where they discussed Ukraine, among other topics. Both leaders reaffirmed that Canada and France will continue to press Russia for clear commitments.
"The goal of this joint commitment with Ukrainians has always been to achieve a strong and lasting peace, with reliable guarantees that will protect Ukraine from any new Russian aggression and ensure the security of all of Europe," Macron added.
Meanwhile, Carney emphasized that Canada seeks to strengthen ties with "reliable allies" like France.
He added that Canada will always stand by to ensure Europe's security and commercial connections.
Security guarantees for Ukraine
Recently, Macron outlined four key elements of security guarantees for Ukraine:
- Immediate support for Ukraine, including new initiatives for equipment supply and adjusting supplies to meet current needs;
- Establishing a framework for Ukraine’s army to ensure future peace and resilience against new Russian offensives;
- The potential deployment of troops in Ukraine based on a voluntary coalition in the future;
- Strengthening European defense as a security guarantee, with additional investments and coordination between armies.
Additionally, national security advisors from Germany, the UK, and France are expected to visit the US.
Following negotiations in Saudi Arabia, the US delegation proposed a comprehensive 30-day ceasefire. Ukraine agreed to the proposal.
Later, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow this week. However, Putin has not provided a definitive response.
