Ukraine will receive a shipment of liquefied natural gas through the terminal in Klaipeda, Lithuania, for the first time. By the end of March, Ukraine will receive about 90 million cubic meters of gas via the new route, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal reported.
"Naftogaz Group, in cooperation with Lithuania's Ignitis Group, will ensure the supply of 90 million cubic meters by the end of March this year," Shmyhal noted.
According to him, diversification of supply routes strengthens the flexibility and resilience of the energy system amid daily Russian attacks.
"Ukraine is also working on developing other regional supply routes, in particular the Vertical Gas Corridor. Together with our partners, we are building a new energy security architecture for Europe, where there will be no place for a Russian molecule, and Ukraine will be one of the energy hubs of the region," he added.
What Naftogaz says
"For the first time, Naftogaz is importing American LNG to Ukraine via the terminal in the Lithuanian port of Klaipeda. Naftogaz will independently deliver the gas to Ukraine during February–March," said Serhii Koretskyi, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz of Ukraine.
He also added that supplies through the Klaipeda terminal complement existing gas import routes and strengthen the resilience of Ukraine's gas supply, reducing dependence on individual directions and increasing system flexibility.
Ukraine seeks new gas supply routes
At the beginning of February, the first shipment of American liquefied natural gas (LNG) this year arrived in Ukraine from Poland. The volume of supply amounted to almost 100 million cubic meters.
Earlier, operators also agreed on a phased increase in capacity for gas imports from Poland to Ukraine starting in early February.
