Explosions were heard in the Russian city of Cheboksary in the Chuvash Republic on the afternoon of May 29. A missile alert has been declared in the region, according to local Telegram channels.

According to reports online, sirens were heard in Cheboksary and other cities across the republic due to a missile threat.

Warnings about the danger are even being broadcast on radio and television. Photos and videos circulating online show smoke rising after the explosions.

Overall, explosions have been reported in three districts of Cheboksary.

It is worth noting that the city is located nearly 1,000 km from the Ukrainian border.

Meanwhile, Cheboksary Mayor Stanislav Trofimov claimed that reports online about explosions were false.

At the same time, flights at Cheboksary Airport were canceled, and passengers were asked to leave the terminal building and disperse around the airport grounds.

Plant producing parts for Iskander and Shahed systems in Cheboksary

In Cheboksary, located about 1,000 km from the Ukrainian border, there is the VNIIR-Progress plant.

The facility is part of the production association ABS Electro. It produces GNSS receivers and antennas for satellite navigation systems such as GLONASS, GPS, and Galileo for the Russian military, including modules of the Kometa type.

These components are actively used in drones, including Shahed-type kamikaze UAVs such as the Shahed-136, as well as in missiles for systems like Iskander-M, Kalibr, and in UMPK kits used for glide bombs.

In addition, VNIIR-Progress produces electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, relays, and contactless modules, which are supplied to the Russian navy, including nuclear submarines of the Yasen-M class submarine project.

In May of this year, Ukrainian drones previously targeted Cheboksary.

The VNIIR-Progress enterprise was among the affected sites, and a large fire broke out at the facility afterward.

The attack on this facility was not the first. The plant was previously targeted in November last year and during the summer as well.
