Denmark has allocated a new military aid package to Ukraine worth 1.6 billion kroner (approximately 400 million euros), according to the Danish Ministry of Defense's press service.

As part of the 27th aid package, Denmark is allocating funds for the purchase of weapons from Ukrainian manufacturers for subsequent transfer to the Ukrainian Defense Forces.

Denmark will also allocate part of the funds for "other forms of assistance," but the ministry did not specify which ones.

"Ukraine's need for military support remains enormous, and one of the best ways we can help is to increase contributions to the Ukrainian defense industry. That is why today we are additionally allocating almost 1.6 billion kroner for the so-called Danish model," said Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen.

In 2024, Ukraine and Denmark introduced a new model of assistance to Ukraine and the transfer of weapons, known as the Danish model. The countries finance the purchase of weapons for the Ukrainian Defense Forces from Ukrainian manufacturers.

Overall, Denmark has earmarked about 5.9 billion kroner (over 920 million euros) for the Danish model for the period 2024–2027.

So far, commitments have been approved for donations totaling about 18.5 billion kroner (2.9 billion euros) under the Danish model from 2024 to 2027. Much of this has been made possible thanks to contributions from allies, particularly from the European Union.

Danish model

In 2024, partners began purchasing weapons for Ukraine directly from domestic manufacturers. Denmark was the first to do so, and later other countries joined the project, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Norway, Canada, and the Baltic states.

This initiative enables the simultaneous strengthening of Ukraine's defense capabilities and its economy.

Through the Danish model, the production of critically essential weapons has been funded, including Bohdana self-propelled howitzers. Such purchases focus on items that can be quickly produced and deployed to the front line, such as drones and artillery.

Last year, more than $500 million was used under the Danish model out of a total of $1.5 billion. Work is currently underway to potentially expand the project's capabilities.

The Ukrainian Armor company, which produces armored vehicles, drones, ammunition, and other equipment, confirmed to RBC-Ukraine that the Danish model is currently a functional and fairly effective aid mechanism.

It is implemented in two formats, depending on the source of funding.

The first format involves funds collected by partners — Denmark, Norway, and other countries. The second format consists of purchasing weapons using profits from frozen Russian assets.

Aid to Ukraine from Denmark

Denmark will allocate $375 million for Ukraine's recovery under the Ukraine Transition Program from 2025 to 2028.

In May, the Danish government announced a new military aid package for Ukraine worth over 4 billion Danish kroner (€536 million).

In April, the Danish government also announced a new defense package for Ukraine amounting to 6.7 billion Danish kroner (about $995 million). The funds will be distributed over 2025–2027. The package includes air defense systems, artillery equipment, and financial support for the Ukrainian Air Force.

Additionally, in March, Denmark's Ministry of Defense announced plans to invest around €40 million in a special innovation fund aimed at strengthening the technological capabilities of the Ukrainian army in the context of modern warfare.
