The outgoing Czech government has announced plans to build and hand over a modern Earth observation satellite to Ukraine. It will be capable of monitoring under any conditions, according to the Czech Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to the announcement, the satellite will be able to collect data regardless of the time of day or weather conditions. The project will be implemented by Czech companies experienced in developing space technologies, particularly small satellites.

The Czech Ministry of Transport noted that the satellite launch is expected to take place within a year. This will be the first time Ukraine receives this type of assistance from a foreign country.

The Czech-made satellite will feature a combined observation system, comprising radar (SAR), optical, and radiation sensors, allowing for monitoring at night or in poor weather conditions.

The project will be carried out under the Czech government's Ukraine recovery program and through cooperation between the Czech Ministry of Transport and Ukraine's State Space Agency. In the future, several similar satellites are planned to be developed.

Czech assistance to Ukraine

In February 2024, Czech President Petr Pavel announced an initiative to collect 800,000 artillery shells for transfer to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Ukraine received the first batch in June 2024.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha recently confirmed that by the end of 2025, Ukraine expects to receive another 1.8 million artillery shells under the Czech-led initiative.

Czechia is considering transferring around 30 modernized T-72M4CZ tanks to Ukraine. Their capabilities allow them to compete with Russia’s most advanced tanks, including the T-90M.
