CBS: Trump may lack votes to appoint Attorney General
President-elect Donald Trump may lack the votes to appoint an Attorney General. He intends to nominate Matt Gaetz for the position, according to CBS News correspondent Scott MacFarlane.
For Gaetz to secure the position of Attorney General, his appointment must first be approved by the US Senate.
According to the CBS News correspondent, Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal states that he knows of five to ten Republican colleagues who won’t vote to confirm Gaetz as Attorney General.
This would be enough to block the appointment, though there are still weeks before his nomination is formally considered by the Senate, during which much could change.
Gaetz is known for initiating the ouster of the House Speaker from his own party, which was the first such case in US history. He takes up an anti-Ukraine stance, advocating to halt military and financial aid to the country.
Additionally, Gaetz was under investigation for nearly three years over allegations of sex trafficking involving a 17-year-old girl. Although no criminal charges were brought, the House Ethics Committee continues to investigate him over accusations of sexual harassment and use of illegal drugs.
Trump’s new team
Following his re-election, Donald Trump has begun selecting members for his team. Notably, historian and diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi stated that the majority of the newly elected US president’s team members hold anti-Putin stance.
As reported, Trump has already selected a Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security.
