Expert on Trump's new team: Vast majority hold anti-Putin stance
The vast majority of the new team of elected US President Donald Trump are individuals with an anti-Putin position. These appointments inspire cautious optimism, stated historian and diplomat Roman Bezsmertnyi in a comment to the RBC-Ukraine YouTube channel.
According to Bezsmetnyi, the vast majority of people who may be appointed to positions in Trump's team are individuals with an anti-Putin, anti-Moscow, and anti-Russian stance
At the same time, according to him, some of them (specifically, Marco Rubio and Mike Waltz), while maneuvering between their anti-Putin positions and support for Ukraine, have shifted to a position of: "Yes, we must support Ukraine, but what's in it for us?"
"And here, we need to think about how to prove Ukraine's position, the position of Ukrainian politics, the establishment, the military-political leadership, and so on. The result is directly linked to the fact that at one time, the US rejected Lend-Lease as a system of assistance to Ukraine and switched to direct budgetary supplies. Although there is clearly a calculation in that, which can only be provided by the Pentagon," the historian noted.
In his opinion, it is very important to wait for appointments at the Pentagon, particularly the Secretary of Defense, as well as at the CIA.
"Clearly, there is also the question of whether the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff will be changed. Although the law prohibits this, hawks have come in. Does Brown suit them? I don't know. So, it's clear that other decisions could be made here. But for now, the appointments that have been made inspire calm optimism from the perspective of Ukraine's interests," Bezsmetnyi added.
