There is an understanding in Ukraine and the West that it’s possible to achieve at least a ceasefire with Russia. However, it will require increased pressure on Moscow, stated President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in his evening address.

The Ukrainian leader reminded that on August 7, national security advisors from Ukraine and NATO countries held talks, which continued the following day. Meanwhile, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is working with European counterparts.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine remains in constant communication with the US. Ukraine’s partners are also in direct contact with Washington.

"There is a shared understanding that it’s possible to achieve at least a ceasefire, and everything depends on applying the right kind of pressure on Russia," Zelenskyy emphasized, adding that the decision must be made in Moscow to end the war it started.

He noted that Russia ignores its losses and conceals information about them. However, the objective reality cannot be blocked, from Russian enterprises shutting down to the damage done to its logistics networks.

Zelenskyy stressed that sanctions now have the potential to work as intended.

Putin's meeting with Witkoff

On Wednesday, August 6, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow. There, he met with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss the possibility of ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.

After US President Donald Trump informed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the meeting, the Ukrainian leader suggested that Russia now appears more inclined toward a ceasefire.

Meanwhile, Bloomberg, citing sources, reported today, August 8, that American and Russian officials are preparing a deal to freeze the war. There has been no official confirmation of this information
