China could be involved in the negotiation process between Ukraine and Russia, but it should not be made the primary mediator, stated US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, according to Voice of America.

Sullivan noted that US President-elect Donald Trump's idea of China's participation in the peace process between Ukraine and Russia is not crazy.

However, he added that China should not dictate terms in Ukraine or become the dominant mediator in the European arena.

Sullivan recalled that Ukrainian authorities had previously expressed interest in China participating in negotiations for a just peace. However, certain initiatives from Beijing, such as lifting economic sanctions on Russia, raised concerns.

Sullivan added that the question is how China can join this process - as a permanent member of the UN Security Council, a major global player, and one of the few countries Russia would have to listen to if China took a stand.

Trump's statements

Trump recently wrote after a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris that the Ukrainian President would like to conclude a deal and end the war.

At the same time, the US President-elect suggested that China could help end the war between Ukraine and Russia.
