Ukraine calls for an urgent UN Security Council meeting and an OSCE session over the overnight Russian strike on Kyiv on May 24, which left more than 80 people injured, including children, according to city authorities and a statement from Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.

A total of 31 injured people, including two children, are currently in city hospitals.

"There are now 81 injured in Kyiv as a result of the massive enemy attack. Among the wounded are three children. Two people were killed," Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said.

Details of overnight attack

Russia launched a large-scale combined strike on the capital Kyiv during the night of May 24, using ballistic missiles and Shahed-type strike drones. Civilian infrastructure was damaged in almost all districts of the city.

In the Shevchenkivskyi district of Kyiv, the Russian Federation struck two schools at once. At one of the institutions, the blast wave and debris blocked the entrance to a basement shelter where people were hiding.

The Lukianivka area, one of the most densely populated neighborhoods in the capital, was also hit. A direct strike completely destroyed the Kvadrat shopping mall. The blast wave also damaged the above-ground vestibule of the Lukianivska subway station, temporarily suspending its operation.

Ukraine calls for international mechanisms to convene

Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said that Ukraine is engaging international platforms in response to the attack.

"I instructed all our missions to international organizations to make full use of the multilateral toolbox in response to last night's barbaric Russian missile attack on Kyiv. UN, OSCE, Council of Europe, and UNESCO should provide an adequate and strong response to the aggressor, which is attempting to compensate for the lack of military advances on the battlefield with terror against civilians," the minister said.

Sybiha stressed that Kyiv demands an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and a joint meeting of the OSCE Forum for Security Co-operation and the OSCE Permanent Council.

"Putin is trying to intimidate Ukraine by attacking civilians and destroying residential buildings, museums, schools, and critical infrastructure. He is also trying to intimidate the world by launching IRBMs against peaceful cities," the Foreign Minister added.

He called on partners to take coordinated action.

"All of this requires strong and coordinated action by the international community. We urge our partners to resolute multilateral actions aimed at deterring Russia and compelling it toward a comprehensive, just, and lasting peace," Sybiha said.

The May 24 strike was not limited to the capital. Several regions were also attacked. See here for more details about Russia's attack on Kyiv, Cherkasy, and the Poltava region.
