An explosion at a US Steel plant in Clairton, Pennsylvania, has left one person dead, ten injured, and emergency crews searching for a missing worker, according to AP.

On August 11, 2025, a powerful explosion occurred at the Clairton Coke Works plant owned by US Steel in Pennsylvania, killing one person, injuring ten others, and leaving one worker missing.

Incident details

The blast happened at around 10:51 AM local time, sending a column of black smoke visible from various parts of the city. A large fire broke out, damaging two coke oven batteries at the facility.

Emergency crews, including firefighters and medics, responded promptly. One injured person was pulled from the rubble several hours after the explosion. In total, ten people were taken to hospitals, seven to Allegheny Health Network and three to UPMC Mercy. Their current conditions have not been disclosed.

Plant status and environmental impact

Clairton Coke Works is the largest coke production facility in North America, producing fuel by heating coal in the absence of oxygen — a process that releases toxic gases. Past incidents at the plant have caused environmental problems and led to fines for violations of environmental regulations.

Although air quality monitors have not detected pollutant levels exceeding permissible limits, local authorities advised residents to stay indoors, keep windows and doors shut, and avoid outdoor physical activity.

Authorities' response and next steps

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro expressed condolences to the victims’ families and called for a thorough investigation. Local authorities and U.S. Steel representatives pledged to provide full assistance to the victims and their families.

The investigation is being overseen by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), and environmental compliance checks are also underway at the facility.

Previously, unidentified drones attacked the Signal defense plant in Stavropol, Russia.

It was also reported that two planes collided on the runway at Kalispell City Airport in Montana, USA, causing one to catch fire.
