Russian forces will not abandon their campaign of terror against civilians and may intensify their attacks. At present, there are two likely scenarios for future Russian strikes on Ukraine, states military expert and serviceman of Ukraine's Territorial Defense Forces, Oleksandr Musiienko, in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
Why Russia is targeting Kyiv and other major cities
Russia is unable to achieve its strategic objectives on the battlefield; its forces are suffering losses, and strikes on its logistics infrastructure are only increasing. As a result, Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to create an image of victory for his domestic audience, according to Musiienko.
"Putin is looking for something that will create an image of strength for the Russian audience and for the world. Something that shows he is in control of the situation. He simply has no other option besides terrorist crimes and these acts of terror against civilians," the expert said.
Two scenarios for escalating attacks
Speaking to RBC-Ukraine, Musiienko outlined two possible scenarios for future Russian strikes:
- Summer attacks. Russia may try to create problems for Ukraine's energy system during peak electricity demand caused by widespread air conditioner use.
- Stockpiling missiles until autumn. The enemy may take a temporary pause to build up missile reserves in an attempt to disrupt the start of the heating season in September.
To build up stockpiles, according to Musiienko, the occupying army may use fewer ballistic missiles and rely more on drones. However, the terror will not stop.
"And in the autumn, if we are talking about the possibility of resuming a real negotiation process, this could, of course, intensify," he concluded.
