Romanian elections: Expert reveals which candidate poses threat to Ukraine

The results of the presidential elections in Romania could also impact the situation in Ukraine, stated historian and diplomat Roman Bezsmerntnyi in a comment to the YouTube channel RBC-Ukraine.
The expert shared his thoughts on the political situation in Romania, particularly mentioning a recent interview with former President Traian Băsescu. He noted that Băsescu, who voted from home, commented, "Well, you have to be real idiots," referring to the government coalition that opposes the leader of the far-right Romanian party Alliance for the Union of Romanians (AUR), George Simion.
The expert emphasized that Băsescu believes that the final candidates will be the liberal mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Dan, and Simion, and predicts that Dan will become president.
Bezsmerntnyi also pointed out that despite conflicts with the leadership of his party, Save Romania Union, Dan remains a popular figure in the country.
"He is a mathematician who knows how to count very well," Bezsmerntnyi said, adding that although the results of his work are questioned, his re-election as mayor of Bucharest demonstrates his political strength.
He also noted that Ukraine hopes for a change of president, which could lead to an increase in aid. However, Bezsmerntnyi also warned about the threat posed by Simion.
"Because Simion is not just a Romanian Trump. He is also an endless repeater of messages produced by the Kremlin. And combined with Georgescu, to whom he promises a position, this creates a mix that could explode. It could explode dangerously for Europe, and for Ukraine as well," the expert pointed out.
To conclude, the expert urged to focus on Dan as the optimal candidate in the second round of elections, which will take place on May 18, highlighting that his independence from party politics could be an advantage in the current situation.
Romania's 2025 presidential elections
On Sunday, May 4, presidential elections were held in Romania after the Constitutional Court annulled the results of the November 2024 vote.
This came after declassified documents were released, indicating that Georgescu's campaign was the result of external influence.
This time, the far-right candidate, George Simion, received the best result in the presidential elections. The second place went to the former mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor Daniel Dan, who also advanced to the second round.
