Negotiation game: What to expect from Trump-Putin talks and deadline for peace

Negotiations between the US and Russia, involving Trump and Putin, will intensify by the end of April. Both leaders have strong motivations to reach agreements, said political analyst Volodymyr Fesenko in a comment to the YouTube channel RBC-Ukraine.
He suggests that US-Russia negotiations could gain momentum in the coming weeks. According to him, these talks are important not only for the two countries but also for Ukraine, as they could open new opportunities for the peace process at this stage.
He emphasized that while Trump understands the nature of Russian politics, he wants to reach an agreement with Putin. The Russian President also realizes the importance of this contact for his strategic interests.
"Trump is a gift for him. Putin understands that now is the chance to negotiate on many issues - an opportunity he didn’t have before," Fesenko noted.
However, he pointed out that while Putin will bargain, he will continue negotiations because he knows they are important to achieving his objectives.
Fesenko also believes that peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the US could begin, where Russia's demands, including those regarding Ukraine, will be discussed.
"Trump is ready for this, and the hints he has already made indicate that various issues will be discussed," he said.
The political analyst stressed that negotiations cannot drag on for too long, as Trump wants quick results.
"Trump has a deadline, and many believe it’s around April 20," Fesenko added, noting that by early May when Trump’s first 100 days in office have passed, he will need a significant foreign policy victory.
In conclusion, Fesenko expects the negotiation process to accelerate soon. Even if a peace deal is not reached quickly, he anticipates the start of trilateral peace talks between Ukraine, Russia, and the US by late March or early April.
Trump-Putin negotiations
Recently, the delegations of Ukraine and the United States met in Saudi Arabia, where the American side proposed a 30-day ceasefire with Russia. Ukraine agreed to the proposal but cautioned that Russia might violate the truce.
To discuss the initiative, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff visited Moscow. However, Putin did not provide a definitive response, stating that Ukraine could use the ceasefire period to rearm. Russian officials confirmed that this was the message conveyed to the US.
European leaders have also expressed doubts about Russia’s willingness to uphold the ceasefire.
White House National Security Advisor Michael Waltz noted that a potential agreement between Ukraine and Russia could involve territorial concessions in exchange for security guarantees, though Ukraine’s NATO membership remains unlikely.
Experts from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW) believe that Putin will not abandon his attempts to occupy Ukraine even after a ceasefire.
Additionally, according to The Independent, Ukraine has set clear red lines for any peace deal with Russia, particularly regarding territorial integrity.
Meanwhile, US envoy Steve Witkoff has revealed that a meeting between Trump and Putin could take place as early as this week.
