Destroying Russian airfields is not currently Ukraine's goal, as it is impossible, stated military expert Mykhailo Zhyrokhov in a commentary for the RBC-Ukraine.

According to Zhyrokhov, Russian forces have been trying for three years to destroy Ukrainian airfields without success. For this reason, targeting airfields is not a priority for Ukraine.

"The goal is to catch aircraft carrying the guided bomb and destroy them on the ground. Destroying taxiways or other elements is not on the agenda. In general, it would require a large number of missiles that we do not have," the expert explained.

According to Zhyrokhov, Ukrainians will not see immediate changes on the front from using ATACMS. Receiving authorization does not mean that strikes against Russia will happen in the coming days.

"Each use involves a very detailed plan, intelligence, and numerous considerations. Preparing for such an attack takes several days, and sometimes even weeks," Zhyrokhov explained.

Background

It was announced that US President Joe Biden will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. One of the topics of their meeting will be the authorization for Ukrainian forces to strike deeper into Russia. Additionally, according to media reports, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is likely to announce during his visit to Kyiv that Ukraine will be permitted to strike Russian targets with long-range weapons.

Authorization for Ukrainian strikes on Russian territory

The UK, France, and the US are supplying Ukraine with long-range missiles but have imposed restrictions on strikes within Russian territory. Despite Russia's escalation, Western allies do not allow Ukraine to use these missiles to strike deep into Russia.

John Kirby noted that the US continues private negotiations with Ukraine on this issue. Pentagon Chief Lloyd Austin added that Russia has moved its tactical aviation out of the range of ATACMS missiles.

Meanwhile, according to the British media, the UK has not yet changed its position on Ukraine's use of Storm Shadow missiles to strike Russia. However, the UK government wants to understand the current situation in Ukraine.
