Zelenskyy to push for NATO invitation and steady arms supply during US visit - Bloomberg
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy will press US President Joe Biden to extend Ukraine an official invitation to join NATO and commit to permanent supplies of advanced weaponry as part of the Ukrainian leader’s victory plan, according to Bloomberg.
Zelenskyy is expected to present the plan to Biden during their meeting in Washington on September 26.
According to sources, the document also outlines a clear path for Ukraine’s membership in the European Union.
Journalists were told by sources that some of Ukraine's supporters have begun considering ceasefire options through negotiations. However, in these discussions, Zelenskyy has maintained his stance that Ukraine cannot concede territory captured by Russia, one source said.
Ukraine and NATO
Ukrainian officials had hoped the country would receive an invitation to join NATO at the summit held in Washington in July. However, that did not happen.
According to Olha Stefanishyna, Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration, Ukraine will join the North Atlantic Alliance as a sovereign, independent country within its 1991 borders. Other options have not been discussed.
Zelenskyy’s plan
Next week, the Ukrainian president will present his victory plan in the US, as it is closely tied to American support. According to Zelenskyy, the plan includes swift decisions to be made between October and December.
The US State Department said it had reviewed the elements of the plan.
