On the eve of May 9, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy made a statement, stressing that Russia’s current military actions will determine how Ukraine will act tomorrow, according to Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel.
Zelenskyy draws a parallel with World War II
On May 8, the Day of Remembrance and Victory over Nazism in World War II, the president reminded of the struggle of previous generations of Ukrainians against occupiers.
He noted that battles for freedom are once again taking place on Ukrainian soil — in the eastern regions, as well as in Dnipropetrovsk, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kharkiv regions, and Donbas.
According to Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the current war is a continuation of the struggle against an aggressor attempting to impose an outdated world order.
The president emphasized that Ukraine intends to preserve its independence and defend the people’s right to life.
Ukraine responds to Russia’s actions
The head of state also commented on the situation at the front and new threats from Russia.
He said that the Ukrainian side had clearly outlined its position in advance and is ready to respond in a "mirror" way to the enemy’s actions.
"Right now, many new threats are coming from Russia. Although we gave them a position that is completely logical and clear — we will act in a mirror manner. Today, they began the day with shelling at the front; there was assault activity. Drones are being used. Yesterday they carried out even more air strikes. There were also our mirror responses. Tomorrow depends on what we hear today," said the guarantor.
Zelenskyy warns of threat to Europe
The president stressed that Russian aggression concerns not only Ukraine. According to him, Moscow continues to threaten virtually all neighboring countries and Europe as a whole.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukrainian forces are currently defending not only national borders, but also broader principles of security on the European continent.
Russia announced a temporary ceasefire regime in effect from midnight on May 8 to May 10. According to the Russian side, during this period, Russian army units are to suspend combat operations along the entire front line.
However, on the night of May 8, Russian forces reportedly continued attacks on Ukrainian positions despite the so-called truce declared by the Kremlin. Shelling and combat activity were recorded after the announced ceasefire had come into effect.
