Throughout the night of May 8, the Russian army continued to strike Ukrainian positions despite the ceasefire announced by Russia's Vladimir Putin, according to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

According to the head of state, as of 7 a.m., Kyiv time, over 140 attacks on Ukrainian positions had been recorded. Russian troops also carried out 10 assault attacks, most of them in the Sloviansk direction.

In addition, Russians carried out over 850 strikes using various types of drones, including FPV drones, Lancets, and attack drones. The use of reconnaissance drones over frontline communities also continued.

"All of this clearly shows that, on the Russian side, there was not even a token attempt to cease fire on the front," Zelenskyy states.

The President also emphasizes that, as in the previous 24 hours, Ukraine will respond to Russia's actions.

"We will defend our positions and people’s lives. Russia must end its war, and everyone will truly see it when movement toward peace begins," the head of state adds.

Ukraine-Russia ceasefire

The Russian Ministry of Defense announced a ceasefire from 12 a.m. on May 8 until May 10. Russia claimed that all Russian military units would allegedly completely cease hostilities, and called on Ukraine to do the same.

The Kremlin also threatened several times to launch massive missile strikes on central Kyiv if Ukrainian authorities attempt to disrupt the May 9 celebrations in Moscow.

Residents and foreign diplomats were urged to evacuate the Ukrainian capital.

The European Union has already responded to Moscow’s threats. It stated that it would not reduce its diplomatic presence in Kyiv, as Russian attacks are a daily reality for Ukraine.

For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy advised representatives of countries that maintain close ties with Russia to refrain from traveling to Moscow on May 9.
