Zelenskyy on Kursk direction: Russia wants to reclaim territories, but no successes are visible
Russian military forces are attempting to regain control of territories in the Kursk region. However, significant successes have not yet been observed, according to a statement from the Ukrainian President during the 20th annual meeting of the Yalta European Strategy.
"Regarding the Kursk direction, the Russians have begun their rapid offensive actions there. They intend to deploy about 60-70 thousand troops in that area. We know there are around 40 thousand troops there. They were aiming for quick breakthroughs and de-occupation. It is reassuring that now not only us but also they are talking about the de-occupation of their territory," the President emphasized.
He noted that despite all the Russian attempts, significant success in their advance is not currently visible.
"Nevertheless, I want to say that they are making these efforts, but we have not yet seen serious successes. Our heroic military forces are holding firm and doing everything for our other military and political steps," the President highlighted.
Operation in the Kursk region
Last month, the Russian army began complaining about battles in the Kursk region. Russia reported that Ukrainian forces had pushed its troops away from the border and started advancing deeper into the territory.
A few weeks later, Ukraine acknowledged involvement in these battles and stated that over 100 settlements had come under Ukrainian control. One of the goals of this operation was to divert Russian forces from Pokrovsk, which at that time was the hottest point on the front line.
The tactic appears to have worked, as the Russian authorities have recently deployed additional units of the 106th Airborne Division to the Kursk region.
It is reported that Russia may begin redeploying more experienced forces to support its current counterattacks and future counteroffensive operations against Ukrainian forces in Russia.
The US Department of Defense also confirmed information about Russia's attempts to conduct counteroffensive actions in the Kursk region. The Pentagon described the scale of these actions as "minor."
