Russia deploys more experienced units to Kursk region - ISW
Russian authorities have deployed additional units from the Russian 106th Airborne (VDV) Division to the Kursk region. Russia may start relocating more experienced forces to support its current counterattacks and future offensive operations against Ukrainian forces in the region, according to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).
Footage released on September 11 shows elements of the Russian 137th Airborne (VDV) Regiment (106th Airborne Division) participating in an assault northwest of Snagost.
ISW has reported that as of late August, units from the 137th Airborne (VDV) Regiment were operating in the Severensk direction in Ukraine.
The 51st Airborne Regiment of the 106th Airborne (VDV) Division is also active in the Kursk region. ISW notes that Russian authorities will require additional manpower and more experienced units to fully expel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region.
Russian authorities may focus on additional elements of the 106th Airborne (VDV) Division and other more experienced combat formations in the Kursk region.
Russian counterattack
On September 10, Russian forces began conducting counterattacks in the Kursk region.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that the Russian counteroffensive actions in the Kursk region are occurring according to a Ukrainian plan.
ISW reports that it remains unclear whether the Russians have enough troops to expel Ukrainian forces from the Kursk region or to defend against new Ukrainian counterattacks.
The US Department of Defense has confirmed reports of Russian attempts to conduct counteroffensive operations in the Kursk region, with the Pentagon describing the scale of these actions as marginal.
According to ISW, as of September 12, the Russians in the Kursk region have achieved only limited success.
