Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy clarified which specific points were being referred to when US President Donald Trump said that one or two issues remained to finalize peace agreements, responding to journalists' questions.
According to the head of state, the prepared 20-point document is currently about 90% ready. Only two key points remain unresolved.
"Two issues remain. These are the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant — how it will operate — and the issue of territories. These are the two issues that remain specifically in the 20-point document," Zelenskyy explained.
He noted that it is precisely the lack of agreements on these points that makes complete finalization of the document impossible at this stage. At the same time, the president stressed that the issue of security guarantees has already been fully agreed upon.
"As for security guarantees, everything is 100% ready. We are only discussing some details regarding the duration of the guarantees," Zelenskyy added.
Trump–Zelenskyy meeting
On December 28, the presidents of Ukraine and the United States, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Donald Trump, held a nearly two-hour-long conversation at Trump's residence in Florida. During the meeting, the sides discussed disputed provisions of the American peace plan for Ukraine.
After the talks concluded, the leaders spoke to the press and announced progress. Donald Trump reported movement on the Donbas issue, noting that no final decisions have been made yet, but that the sides have made significant progress. He also announced the creation of a special working group on peace settlement involving senior US officials that will interact with the Russian side.
Volodymyr Zelenskyy, for his part, said that the peace plan is agreed at 90%, while security guarantees from the United States are decided at 100%. According to media reports, Trump is ready to submit the issue of these guarantees to the US Congress for approval.
Today, Zelenskyy also said that Ukraine considers it necessary to secure the key 20-point plan to end the war through a nationwide referendum.
