Zelenskyy had five main requests during his European tour: Politico analysis
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Britain, France, Italy, and Germany in 36 hours, focusing on five requests to the leaders of the four countries, Politico informs.
Ukraine's invitation to NATO
According to the news agency, the first request could be an invitation for Ukraine to join NATO. However, obtaining such an invitation in the near future is very challenging, as the US and Germany still oppose it. Getting an invitation anytime soon is going to be a "big ask."
Assistance in neutralizing missiles and drones
The second request is about the protection of Ukraine's airspace. This initiative could be implemented if Poland and Romania agreed to intercept Russian drones and missiles heading toward their territories.
As Politico notes, the chances of this request being fulfilled are minimal due to allies' fears of being drawn into a war with Russia.
However, allies might fulfill Ukraine's request for additional air defense systems. In this regard, Kyiv's primary goal is to secure more Patriot and SAMP/T batteries.
Permission for strikes deep into Russia
During meetings with the leaders of Britain, France, Italy, and Germany, Zelenskyy specifically requested permission to conduct strikes deep into Russia using the provided weapons.
However, European countries remain concerned that such a move could escalate the war. According to Politico, the chances of this request being granted are also minimal.
Revival of discussions on supplying Taurus missiles
Despite Ukraine's requests, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has categorically refused to supply the Ukrainian Armed Forces with long-range Taurus missiles.
Zelenskyy may have attempted to revive discussions on this issue, but Politico reports that the likelihood of changing the German government's position is low.
Investments in Ukraine's defense industry
Journalists remind that the Ukrainian government aims to attract investments into the defense-industrial complex. This will help improve the country’s economy and ensure that Ukrainian defenders are supplied with weapons.
There has already been progress in this area, as Ukraine has managed to sign a number of contracts with foreign defense companies.
Thus, according to Politico's assessment, the chances of success in this matter are the highest among all requests.
Zelenskyy's trip
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Britain, France, Italy, and Germany in a very short period, where he met with the leaders of these four countries.
The primary reason for this trip was the Ukrainian leader’s intention to present a victory plan to important partners.
Additionally, today, on October 11, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth €1.4 billion following his meeting with Zelenskyy.
