Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has congratulated the new Prime Minister of Hungary, Péter Magyar, on his appointment and said Ukraine is ready to cooperate.
"Congratulations to Péter Magyar on his appointment and the start of his work as Prime Minister of Hungary. Symbolically, this inauguration takes place on Europe Day," the President's statement said.
Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is ready to develop cooperation with Hungary and build strong relations between the two countries "based on good neighborliness and respect for our people."
He added that together, Ukraine and Hungary can "add more strength to their peoples and make all of Europe stronger."
"I wish you success and good results in your position!" the Ukrainian leader concluded.
Background
In April 2026, the opposition Tisza Party, led by Péter Magyar, won the Hungarian parliamentary elections. The victory was so decisive that the party secured a constitutional majority — 141 mandates out of 133 required (out of a total 199 seats).
On May 9, the newly elected Hungarian parliament held its first session. Lawmakers supported Péter Magyar as prime minister by a majority vote. His deputy in the Tisza Party, Ágnes Forsthoffer, was elected speaker of parliament.
Notably, former Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán was absent from the inaugural session.
