The war in Ukraine could end as early as autumn 2026. If Ukraine survives the winter and spring begins, the advantage will be on its side, according to a statement by former US presidential special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, during the discussion Ukraine: Futures' Frontline in Davos.
Kellogg believes the war could end as early as August 24, 2026, if Ukraine survives the winter. In that case, it would gain an advantage over Russia.
"But I really do believe if Ukraine gets through this winter, January, February, and you get into March and April, the advantage accrues to you, to Ukraine, not to Russia... And I'm hoping by Independence Day this summer, there's peace in the land," he said.
Kellogg noted that the coming months are critical. The Ukrainian army is capable of fully stopping the Russians. Despite loud statements, the Kremlin's real successes in Ukraine are highly questionable.
Russia has not achieved a single strategic objective. Its forces have not captured any key cities and have instead suffered massive losses. Many frontline units have been destroyed, and many high-ranking Russian military officials have been eliminated.
"He (Putin - ed.) measures his advances in meters, not in miles. And if he's not in Odessa, he's not in Kyiv. He hasn't got out of the really out of the Donbass region at all. He's attacked in Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, but he's having major problems," Kellogg concluded.
Meanwhile, Head of the Office of the President Kyrylo Budanov reported progress toward ending the war in Ukraine and expressed "cautious optimism" about it. However, in his view, the war will not end soon.
US President Donald Trump believes that Ukraine and Russia are "reasonably close" to reaching a peace agreement. He said he is "helping NATO" and announced a meeting with Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Zelenskyy departed for Davos on the morning of January 22 to meet with Trump.
