War in Ukraine enters decisive phase, there is a real risk of global conflict - Polish PM
The risk of a global conflict is real following Russia's launch of a hypersonic ballistic missile targeting Dnipro, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk says, according to Reuters.
"The war in the east is entering a decisive phase, we feel that the unknown is approaching," Tusk said at the teachers conference.
The Polish Prime Minister described the conflict as the one reaching dramatic proportions. "The last few dozen hours have shown that the threat is serious and real when it comes to global conflict," Tusk noted.
Missile strike
Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed on November 21 that the missile used to strike Dnipro was the Oreshnik missile. Putin also called the attack a response to the US and UK permission for Ukraine to strike Russian territory with advanced Western weapons, which added "elements of a global character" to the conflict.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the missile strike as a further escalation, highlighting Russia's recent deployment of North Korean troops on its territory.
Ukraine's Defense Intelligence revealed that Russia used its Kedr missile system in the attack on Dnipro. The missiles were launched from the Astrakhan region, with a flight time of just 15 minutes to reach the city.
The missile was equipped with six warheads, each equipped with six submunitions.
Poland, which shares borders with Ukraine, Russia, and Belarus, has been a leading voice urging NATO members to increase defense spending. In particular, the country has allocated approximately 4.7% of its GDP to bolster its armed forces by 2025.
Recently, Russia also stated that a new US missile defense base in northern Poland would increase the overall level of nuclear danger. Still, Warsaw responded that Moscow's threats only strengthened the case for NATO defense.
