The United States may restrict China's access to memory chips for artificial intelligence and equipment for their production as early as next month, according to Bloomberg.

The new restrictions will be aimed at preventing the American company Micron Technology and South Korean companies SK Hynix and Samsung Electronics from supplying Chinese firms with high-end chips.

It is known that the United States is working on several types of restrictions that will be aimed at keeping critical technologies away from Chinese manufacturers. This also includes restrictions on the sale of chip manufacturing equipment. These rules will apply to memory chips for artificial intelligence.

If such restrictions are introduced, they will affect HBM2 chips and more modern models, including HBM3 and HBM3E, and the equipment for their production.

It is not yet clear what powers the US will use to restrict South Korean companies.

It is likely to be the Foreign Direct Product Rule (FDPR). It allows the United States to impose controls on foreign-made products that use even a small amount of American technology. After all, both SK Hynix and Samsung use software and hardware for chip design from the American companies Cadence Design Systems and Applied Materials.

China's assistance to Russia's aggression against Ukraine

The United States believes that China is helping Russia in the war in Ukraine. It is reported that China is providing satellite images to the Russians, as well as spare parts for fighter jets, microchips, and other dual-use equipment.

In addition, Vice President of the European Commission Valdis Dombrovskis said that China supplies Russia with dual-use products used for weapons production.

At the same time, after the visit of Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba to China, it has strengthened export control over drones intended for military use.
