The US Senate plans to pass a defense budget bill for fiscal year 2026 next week. It provides funding for assistance to Ukraine, says US Democratic Senator Chris Coons at the Ukraine Breakfast in Davos.

According to him, next week the US Congress plans to pass a bill on defense appropriations, including defense and intelligence appropriations. Among other things, this document will include funding for direct US assistance to Ukraine.

The senator did not name the exact amount of the appropriations, but noted that it is an important public signal of US support for Ukraine — hundreds of millions of dollars.

Coons added that Congress should be prepared to promptly ratify strong security guarantees for Ukraine as soon as there is an agreement on a peace deal to end the war.

US President Donald Trump signed the national defense authorization law for fiscal year 2026 back on December 18. This document provides for the allocation of $800 million to Ukraine for fiscal years 2026 and 2027.

The funds are provided under the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) and will be spent on the purchase of US weapons for Ukraine.

Already in early January 2026, the United States announced a significant increase in the military budget for fiscal year 2027. It will amount to $1.5 trillion (for comparison, the budget for 2026 is $901 billion). This will be the largest adjustment to defense spending in the past decade.
