Marta Kostyuk reached a historic milestone at the US Open, becoming the only Ukrainian player to advance to the second round of the tournament.

Kostyuk's record achievement

Her victory over Katie Boulter allowed Marta to play her 50th main-draw match at a Grand Slam tournament. Before her, only four Ukrainian players had reached this milestone:

  • Elina Svitolina – 155 matches
  • Lesia Tsurenko – 83
  • Kateryna Volodko (Bondarenko) – 68
  • Alona Bondarenko – 53

Kostyuk also has one of the best win rates among Ukrainian women in her first 50 matches at the Slams, with 28 won matches. Only Elina Svitolina has won more at this stage, with 20 wins.

What Kostyuk said after victory

Marta Kostyuk commented on her win over Boulter, as quoted by "Big Tennis of Ukraine."

"Six match points to win? I really felt on one of them that I was about to beat her. When I missed the drive volley, that was tough. And then I had to come back from 0:40 on my serve… I'm very happy I won 6-4, 6-4, and finished the match in two sets," said Kostyuk.

She also thanked her team and the fans.

"First of all, I want to thank the fans. Thank you for your support! I think this is my first win on this court; before I always lost here," Marta said with a smile.

Svitolina's record streak ends

Three Ukrainians were eliminated at the start of the 2025 US Open: Yulia Starodubtseva, Dayana Yastremska, and Elina Svitolina.

Elina Svitolina's defeat was especially disappointing. For the first time in eight years, she failed to make it past the opening round of the US Open, ending her record streak of 21 straight first-round Grand Slam victories.

Next match

In the second round of the US Open, Marta Kostyuk will face the world No. 81, Turkish player Zeynep Sonmez.

The match will take place on Thursday, August 28. This will be the second face-to-face meeting between the athletes. The Ukrainian won the first one.
