Elina Svitolina's US Open 2025 ends in round one, her worst run since 2014

Ukraine's top player, Elina Svitolina, suffered a surprising defeat in her opening match at the 2025 US Open. For the Ukrainian, this is her worst result at the tournament in the past 11 years.
Svitolina vs. Bondar
Svitolina's opponent was world No. 97 Anna Bondar from Hungary. Before this, the players had met twice at Grand Slam tournaments, with the Ukrainian winning both times.
The start of the match was even at 2-2, but Bondar seized the initiative and won four games in a row, taking the first set 6-2.
In the second set, the Hungarian quickly went up 2-0 and later extended her lead to 5-1. Despite Svitolina's attempts to close the gap, Bondar finished the match with a 6-4 win.
The match lasted 1 hour and 41 minutes. The Ukrainian made 41 unforced errors compared to her opponent's 22, though she led in winners with 23 to Bondar's 20.
Svitolina's worst result at US Open
The first-round defeat was Svitolina's worst result at the US Open since 2014, when she lost to Slovenia's Polona Hercog.
It was also her first Grand Slam opening-round exit in seven years. The last time this happened was at Wimbledon 2018, where she lost to Germany’s Tatjana Maria.
In 2024, Svitolina reached the third round of the US Open, and then she lost to third seed Coco Gauff.
Ukrainians at 2025 US Open
After the exits of Dayana Yastremska, Svitolina, and Yulia Starodubtseva, only Marta Kostyuk remains in the main draw. In the first round, she will face Britain's Katie Boulter on Tuesday, August 26.
