The US intelligence community is examining possible Cuban responses to military action by the United States, according to CBS News.
According to two officials, in early May, analysts at the Pentagon and the Defense Intelligence Agency began analyzing how Cuba might react to a strike.
Work is currently underway to study military scenarios to be presented to US President Donald Trump.
CBS News reports that such intelligence assessments aim not only to show the immediate consequences of US actions but also the chain of reactions that may follow.
US military strategists often take such analyses into account when developing options for the US President to consider.
Trump wants to take over Cuba
Recently, Donald Trump has been making increasingly frequent statements regarding Cuba. He has previously noted on multiple occasions that after Iran, the Caribbean island nation could become the next priority of US foreign policy.
During a speech to members of the Forum Club in West Palm Beach, Trump stated that Washington seeks to establish control over Cuba almost immediately.
Trump’s team has also begun discussing scenarios for possible coercive pressure on Havana, including the possibility of a military strike.
At the same time, the Cuban authorities have no intention of giving in without a fight. Earlier reports indicated that Cuba had acquired drones to bolster its defense capabilities amid tensions in relations with the US.
Meanwhile, the United States has deployed an aircraft carrier strike group led by the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz to the Caribbean.
