US Democrats begin voting to nominate Harris for president
Delegates from the Democratic Party in the United States began voting for their candidate for the presidential election. The current Vice President Kamala Harris is the main candidate, as she has no competitors, according to The New York Times.
About 4,000 delegates from the Democratic Party will take part in the online voting.
According to the rules of the Democratic National Committee, Harris's presidential campaign - and anyone who wants to challenge her - had to submit documents and receive digital signatures from at least 300 delegates, with no more than 50 from one state, by July 30.
No contenders have met this threshold to challenge Harris's nomination, and she is currently the only one who meets the requirements. No prominent Democrat has stepped forward to challenge her.
A few days after US President Joe Biden withdrew from the race, Harris was supported by more than 3,000 of the 4,000 delegates. As a result, she collected 3,923 delegate signatures during the qualifying period.
How online roll call takes place
Delegates will vote via an online platform. Once the roll call vote begins, each eligible delegate will receive a personalized, watermarked form to cast their vote.
The Democratic National Committee will then tally the votes and provide full results after the roll call vote is completed.
Harris replaced Biden
This month, US President Joe Biden, who was the main opponent of former president Donald Trump, withdrew his candidacy from the presidential race.
He suggested that the Democrats support the candidacy of the current US Vice President Kamala Harris. Harris had a rating of more than 45% of voters, even before Biden supported her.
Harris is ahead of Trump in four key states out of seven.
In the first week of her campaign, Harris raised a record $200 million in donations. Her headquarters said that this was evidence of overwhelming support for the candidate's bid for the US presidency.
