US Congress threatens sanctions against countries refusing to accept their migrants
The United States of America is ready to impose sanctions against those countries that refuse to take back their citizens illegally in the United States, according to Speaker of the House of Representatives Mike Johnson.
“Colombia and all nations should be on notice - Congress is fully prepared to pass sanctions and other measures against those that do not fully cooperate or follow through on requirements to accept their citizens who are illegally in the United States,” Johnson said.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives added that White House President Donald Trump puts the United States first, and Congress will implement policies that “reinforce his agenda.”
Fight against illegal immigrants in United States
The issue of mass deportations of illegal immigrants from the United States was one of the main promises of Trump's election campaign. On January 24, the White House announced the first steps in this regard.
However, not all countries agreed to take back their migrants immediately. During the incident with Colombia, the United States threatened the country with 25% duties on all goods and sanctions, after which Bogota and Washington reached an understanding.
