Representatives of the US Republican Party have reacted ambiguously to President Donald Trump's threats to take control of Greenland. Some believe that Trump could undermine NATO, while others advise against worrying, CNN reports.

Republicans fear that Trump may carry out his threats to seize Greenland by military force. This could potentially destabilize NATO completely.

"I’ve heard no compelling reason to support actions against NATO allies. We’re risking that if we proceed much further," Congressman Dan Newhouse tells the agency.

Congressman Don Bacon criticized Trump, noting that it is impossible to treat allies this way, especially when "they would cooperate with us at all times on anything we wanted to do there to begin with".

Congressman Mark Alford supports the idea of taking control of Greenland, but suggested that it should be achieved through non-military means. The US should establish very close relations with the island.

"The way to go about it is through using our influence as a nation to try to persuade the people of Greenland that it’s in their best interest to separate from Denmark so that we can buy them," he says.

Another congressman, Richard Hudson, tells the agency that he was not particularly concerned about the prospect of invading the territory of a NATO ally. And Congressman Buddy Carter called Trump's threats a tool in reserve.

"Look, this is a tool in the tool chest. Whether he’s just threatening or using it as leverage. Who knows?" he says.

Meanwhile, French President Emmanuel Macron's administration has initiated NATO military exercises in Greenland amid the escalating crisis surrounding the island.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens Frederik Nielsen warned that military conflict between Greenland and the US is unlikely, but such a scenario cannot be ruled out. The island's residents must be prepared. Especially considering that Trump refused to comment on the possibility of using force to annex Greenland to the US.
