US and China to finalize TikTok deal on September 19, Bessent says

Representatives of the United States and China have worked out the basis for an agreement on TikTok, and the leaders of the countries will close this issue at talks preliminarily scheduled for Friday, September 19, said US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after negotiations between representatives of the countries in Madrid, reported the NYT.
"We have a framework for a TikTok deal. The two leaders, President Trump and Party Chair Xi, will speak on Friday to complete the deal," Bessent told reporters in Madrid.
He refused to comment on details, citing private negotiations.
NYT recalls that Trump has time until Wednesday to enact or postpone the law requiring the separation of TikTok from its Chinese owner, ByteDance.
Otherwise, the application will face a ban in the United States related to national security.
TikTok in the United States
At the beginning of this year, a law came into force in the United States that banned the operation of the popular social network TikTok in the country for security reasons.
Before that, the Chinese company ByteDance refused to sell the platform, which would have made it possible to avoid the ban.
The service stopped operating in the United States. When trying to open the application, users saw a message about the unavailability of TikTok. However, this lasted only 12 hours.
That is because Trump, at the start of his second presidential term, postponed the law requiring the sale of TikTok's US assets or the blocking of the platform in the United States.
First, the deadline was moved to the beginning of April, then to mid-June, and later also to September. According to Reuters, the Trump administration plans to postpone the deadline for the sale of TikTok again.
TikTok issue in the United States is being resolved
US President Donald Trump announced a conversation with Chinese President Xi Jinping and stated that there were good results from the negotiations between representatives of the countries in Madrid.
In the Spanish capital on September 14, negotiations began between representatives of China and the United States, at which trade issues, tariffs, and the agreement on TikTok were discussed.
