On Thursday, December 4, Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff and US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law will meet in Miami with National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov. They will continue discussions on the peace agreement, according to the Associated Press.
"Witkoff and Kushner are set to meet with Ukraine’s lead negotiator, Rustem Umerov, on Thursday in Miami for further talks, according to a senior Trump administration official," the outlet reports.
US peace plan and shuttle diplomacy
In November, the US presented Ukraine with a new peace plan to end the war. The document consisted of 28 points, but it was clearly too favorable to Russia.
For this reason, meetings between US and Ukrainian delegations were held on November 23 and 30 in Geneva and Miami to revise the document and make it more advantageous for Kyiv.
Already on Tuesday, December 2, Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow to meet with Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin and discuss the revised US peace plan.
Following the meeting, Putin’s aide Yuri Ushakov stated that no compromises have yet been reached, but the parties will continue to work. He also reported that aside from this peace plan, Washington handed Moscow four additional documents related to ending the war.
The wording was widely interpreted as meaning that Putin had rejected the US peace plan. However, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov claimed on December 3 that this was allegedly not the case.
Meanwhile, according to Reuters, Witkoff and Kushner reported to Trump about a productive meeting with Putin. There are a few details so far, but a few hours ago, Trump told the press that the meeting was quite good, and that his envoy and son-in-law had the impression that Putin wants to end the war.
At the same time, as noted above, negotiations will continue. On Wednesday evening, December 3, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that the Ukrainian delegation is preparing for a meeting in the US.
According to him, there is constant communication among all partners and between partners and Ukraine.
"Everything is moving quite productively now — at the meetings in Geneva and in Florida, Ukraine was heard and listened to. And this matters. We expect it will continue this way. Only by taking Ukraine’s interests into account is an honorable peace possible," Zelenskyy stressed.
He added that the world clearly feels that there is now a real opportunity to end the war, and therefore, the activity at the negotiating table must be reinforced with pressure on Russia.
