Ukrainian FM calls overnight Russian strike on energy grid act of genocide

Russian forces carried out a massive attack on Ukraine's critical infrastructure. Depriving people of energy amid falling autumn temperatures is equivalent to genocide, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha reports.
"Russian terrorists struck critical civilian infrastructure, particularly energy, across Ukraine with hundreds of drones and missiles. I urge all partners to respond strongly," said Sybiha.
According to him, Russian President Vladimir Putin launched the attack on October 10, on the anniversary of the first massive strike on Ukraine's energy infrastructure in 2022.
"This is a deliberate demonstration that he has not changed his aggressive actions, terrorist methods, and ultimatums in three years, and he continues to reject any meaningful diplomacy and peace efforts," added the foreign minister.
He also emphasized that Russia is worse than Hamas. Even Hamas agreed to a ceasefire and peace efforts. In contrast, Moscow continues the senseless war it started — a war it cannot and will not win.
"Depriving people of energy amid dropping autumn temperatures amounts to genocide under Article II (c) of the Genocide Convention: creating unbearable conditions of life to destroy a national group," Sybiha stressed.
In the politician's opinion, pressure on Moscow is the only recipe that can work, but it must be strong and consolidated. This means economic pressure through tough sanctions, military pressure through strengthened support for Ukraine, and political pressure through full isolation.
"Putin must feel that the cost of continuing the war exceeds the cost of stopping it. He must feel that continuing this war endangers his regime," the foreign minister added.
Russian attack on Ukraine on October 10
Overnight, Russia carried out a massive attack on Ukraine, using strike drones and missiles of various types. In Kyiv, 12 people were injured in the strikes. According to Mayor Vitali Klitschko, the left bank of the city was completely without electricity due to damage to energy facilities.
Dnipro and Zaporizhzhia also came under Russian attack — fires broke out there, and there are civilian casualties. According to preliminary information, the enemy deliberately targeted energy infrastructure facilities.
Power outage schedules have been introduced across Ukraine.
