Ukrainian Armed Forces counterattack near Pokrovsk - Forbes
Ukrainian defense forces are conducting counterattacks near Pokrovsk, where Russian forces have been advancing for an extended period with continuous assaults. Reinforcements could assist the Ukrainian Armed Forces in altering the trend of the enemy's approach towards the city, reports Forbes.
According to the American edition, certain counterattacks near Pokrovsk may involve at least the Kara-Dag Brigade of the Ukrainian National Guard, the 12th Azov Brigade, and the 93rd Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Their actions have resulted in either slowing down or slightly pushing back the Russian forces in this sector.
Forbes advises against expecting immediate radical changes around Pokrovsk.
Forbes notes that even a loss of momentum for the Russian forces allows Ukrainian defenders to entrench and fortify their positions around Pokrovsk ahead of the coming winter.
According to forecasts from the Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies, the battle for Pokrovsk will become the culmination of the enemy's offensive operation on the southwestern theater of military operations in 2024.
"The Kara-Dag Brigade’s fierce actions in Selydove, a front-line town southeast of Pokrovsk, might be the most significant of the recent counterattacks," writes Forbes.
The American edition specifically mentions an example where troops from the National Guard Brigade successfully struck Russian tanks attempting to enter Selydove via the main road from east to west.
The Ukrainian Center for Defense Strategies pointed out that without success in the Selydove area, the Russian forces cannot continue their advance towards Pokrovsk.
"But now that fresh and well-equipped Ukrainian troops are in Selydove, and attacking, the Russian conquest of Pokrovsk - once seemingly inevitable - is looking a little less likely," Forbes writes.
Situation in the Pokrovsk direction
The Pokrovsk direction is currently one of the hottest spots on the front. Russian forces are positioned just 11 kilometers from Pokrovsk, prompting a mandatory evacuation of civilians in the area.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that additional reinforcements would be deployed to strengthen the Pokrovsk direction.
According to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi, the Defense Forces have halted the advance of Russian troops near Pokrovsk. Over the past six days, the enemy has made no progress in this sector.
On September 6, the 59th Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported on the situation near Pokrovsk, noting that the Russian army had somewhat slowed their combat operations there and had begun preparations for defense.
Military expert Oleksii Hetman told RBC-Ukraine that, unlike other front directions, the terrain near Pokrovsk is conducive to the advancing actions of the Russian forces.
