The Chairman of NATO’s Military Committee, Admiral Giuseppe Cavo Dragone, stated that NATO believes that the war between Russia and Ukraine has effectively reached a stalemate, and the Kremlin’s attempts to gain the upper hand have ended in a strategic defeat, according to the BBC.
Dragone said that NATO will stand with Ukraine until the day “we bring it to the negotiating table for a lasting peace.”
The head of NATO’s Military Committee added that, from an operational standpoint, in his view, the war between Russia and Ukraine has reached a deadlock and that "it was almost time to sit and talk because it's a waste of lives."
Pointing out that Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022 led to the accession of two more countries — Finland and Sweden — to the Western alliance, Admiral Dragone called the war a strategic failure for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, despite Russia’s recent slow and incremental gains on the battlefield.
"They will not get a friendly or puppet government like in Belarus. Putin will not succeed," he added.
When asked whether European countries are ready to continue supporting Ukraine’s defense, he replied that they are. In his opinion, it is beneficial that they received a kind of wake-up call and are now taking responsibility for their own defense.
Regarding the risk of future invasions or attacks, Admiral Dragone stated that if such a place were to exist — and he emphasized the conditional nature of his statement — it would likely be the Baltic states: Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.
However, he noted that, as NATO has declared, Article 5 would be invoked, which considers an attack on one member an attack on all, and that the alliance would come to their defense.
It is worth noting that earlier today, US President Donald Trump expressed confidence that the war in Ukraine could be resolved in a short time. In his opinion, it would take only a few months.
More details about the US leader’s statement can be found in RBC-Ukraine’s report.
It should also be added that Trump previously stated he had managed to end eight wars and expressed confidence that the war between Russia and Ukraine would become the ninth one he could resolve.
