Ukraine intends to increase gas imports due to increased Russian strikes on energy facilities, according to Ukrainian Energy Minister Svitlana Hrynchuk.

At the same time, she did not specify the expected increase in imports, noting that it could be one-third of the total volume that had been planned for import earlier.

"We plan to increase import capacity by another 30%," Hrynchuk says.

Given that the volume of imports was previously planned at 4.6 billion cubic meters, it can be assumed that an additional 1.5 billion cubic meters of gas will need to be purchased.

Hrynchuk discussed the issue of increasing imports with G7 representatives on October 7, and work is now underway to increase the previously provided loan of $500 million from the EBRD and a grant from the European Investment Bank of €300 million.

"We discussed the possibility of extending these loans under the guarantees of the European Commission, and we are discussing with some countries the possibility of providing grant-based assistance to increase gas imports," Hrynchuk says.

Russian strikes on energy infrastructure

In early October, the Russians launched a massive strike on Ukraine's energy facilities. As a result of Russian terror, 307,000 consumers in several districts of the Chernihiv region were left without electricity.

At the same time, the Sumy region was also hit by Russian strikes, resulting in damage and power outages. In addition, due to the Russian strike on an energy facility in Slavutych, Kyiv region, the Chornobyl nuclear power plant was in a state of blackout.

In addition, today, October 4, the Russian army struck the energy infrastructure of the Sumy region. The city of Shostka is without power.

Russia also struck gas infrastructure facilities twice during the week. Civilian facilities that supply Ukrainians with gas during the heating season were hit.
