Attacks on Russian territory are a response to the Kremlin’s aggression against Ukraine, said Ukraine’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Andrii Melnyk, during a UN Security Council meeting on May 19.
Melnyk responded to Russia’s representative Vasily Nebenzya, who complained about the massive attack on Moscow on May 17.
"Stop complaining about the suffering of poor Russians. What Russia is witnessing is a boomerang of war launched by Putin against Ukraine and now returning with triple force, striking with painful precision the very hand that set it in motion," the Ukrainian diplomat said.
He emphasized that Ukraine does not target civilian objects.
"We never target civilians. We only destroy military assets in full compliance with international humanitarian law," he stressed.
He also called on UN member states to strengthen sanctions against Russia and cut off the supply of Western components for Russian missiles.
Ukraine initiated an emergency UN Security Council meeting following Russia’s May 14 attack, which killed 24 people in Kyiv alone.
Strikes on Moscow
On the night of May 17, Russia experienced one of the largest drone attacks in recent times. The main targets were Moscow and the Moscow region.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Defense stated that its Defense Forces struck the Moscow oil refinery for the first time, the Solnechnogorsk fuel depot, and several enterprises linked to the production of microelectronics for Russia’s military-industrial complex.
Ukraine’s Security Service (SBU) also reported strikes on the Volodarskoye oil pumping station and the Angstrem plant, which produces semiconductors for Russia’s defense industry.
