Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha announced that Syria's embassy in Kyiv will reopen, while Ukraine will open its embassy in Damascus.

He said that today he held talks with Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad Hassan al-Shaibani, during which the sides discussed a range of important issues and initiatives, primarily focused on security, noting that the safety of Europe and the Middle East is interconnected.

"We will continue working together to advance a lasting peace for our peoples. We also addressed logistics, including the development of trade and maritime routes — areas with strong potential to deepen economic cooperation," the minister said.

Sybiha emphasized that food security remains a key priority. According to him, Ukraine is ready to contribute, including through the Grain From Ukraine initiative, to support regional stability.

"Bilateral trade has already increased ninefold since the signing of the Joint communiqué on restoring diplomatic relations, and we see clear opportunities to expand this further," he added.

The ministers also discussed humanitarian and educational cooperation. Sybiha noted that many Syrian students have studied and continue to study in Ukraine, providing a strong foundation for further bilateral collaboration.

In sum, the Ukrainian minister confirmed that both countries will reopen their embassies.

"We agreed to reopen embassies in Kyiv and Damascus in the near future — an important step in strengthening our partnership," he said.

Ukraine, Syria move closer

On April 5, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Syria, emphasizing the continuation of Kyiv's diplomacy for real security and economic engagement.

Zelenskyy later met with Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa. Following the meeting, both countries agreed to work together to enhance security and development opportunities for "their societies."

The sides also expressed strong interest in exchanging military and security experience.
