On the night of August 9, the Security Service of Ukraine, in coordination with the Armed Forces of Ukraine and Special Operations Forces, launched a powerful strike on the Russian military airfield Lipetsk-2, according to RBC-Ukraine's sources.

According to the sources, the airfield housed several dozen fighter jets, helicopters, and storage facilities containing over 700 guided aerial bombs.

The Ukrainian drone strike triggered a massive explosion that caused a chain reaction and extensive fire across a significant portion of the airfield. Local authorities confirmed the detonation and announced the evacuation of residents from nearby areas.

It is noted that most of the aircraft stationed at Lipetsk-2 didn't manage to take off before the attack.

"The Security Service of Ukraine, in cooperation with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, continues its methodical work to destroy Russian aviation logistics to prevent the enemy from using guided aerial bombs (KAB) against Ukrainian cities. Earlier in August, we destroyed fighter jets and aerial bombs at the Morozovsk airfield, and today it was the turn of Lipetsk-2," a source in the SSU said.

In addition, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported that the attack on the Russian airfield affected storage facilities with KABs and several other important targets in the airfield area. The strike resulted in a severe fire, with multiple ignition sources and repeated detonations recorded.

The Lipetsk airfield is known to base Su-34, Su-35, and MiG-31 aircraft, which belong to the Russian Aerospace Forces. Details regarding the impact of the strike are still being clarified.

Strikes on Russian missile divisions

Ukrainian forces also targeted Russian anti-aircraft missile divisions in the temporarily occupied territory of the Donetsk region. Specifically, three enemy radars were hit: two from the S-350 system and one from the S-300 system.

The destruction of one S-350 radar has been confirmed, and information about the other targets is being updated. Following the strikes, all three enemy radars ceased operation.

Details of the airfield explosions

Explosions erupted overnight near Lipetsk at the military airfield, leading to a large-scale fire. Russian sources reported an attack as the cause of the fire.

The local Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations confirmed the fire at the airfield, assigning it a Level 3 severity rating. The cause of the fire was not disclosed.

A state of emergency has been declared in four towns within the Lipetsk region, leading to evacuations, suspension of public transportation, and cancellation of all recreational activities.

Earlier, satellite images of the Lipetsk airfield were published after the strike.
