Canada continues its UNIFIER military mission

Canada’s Minister of National Defense, David McGuinty, announced the extension of Operation UNIFIER for an additional three years, until 2029.

As part of the mission, Canadian forces will continue training Ukrainian servicemen and commanders. The number of Canadian personnel will be increased, allowing training to be better adapted to the needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

$2 billion in military aid

Canada announced $2 billion in military support for the 2026–2027 fiscal year.

In addition, Ukraine will receive over 400 armored vehicles, including:

  • 66 light armored LAV 6 vehicles;

  • 383 Senator armored vehicles.

This is expected to strengthen the capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces on the battlefield.

Support for Ukraine’s energy sector

Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand, announced an additional $20 million contribution to Ukraine’s Energy Support Fund.

The funds will be used to purchase equipment for repairing and restoring critical energy infrastructure damaged by Russian strikes.

New sanctions against Russia

At the same time, Canada is introducing new restrictions on Russia, including:

  • Sanctions on 21 individuals and 53 companies;

  • Restrictions on 100 vessels of Russia’s shadow fleet;

  • Lowering the price cap on Russian oil.

The Government of Canada emphasizes that these measures aim to reduce Russia’s financial capacity to continue its war.

Ottawa stated that support for Ukraine remains steadfast. Canada will continue providing Ukraine with military aid to defend its freedom and achieve lasting peace.

Canada’s support

Canada, in particular, co-chairs the International Coalition for the Return of Ukrainian Children alongside Ukraine.

The minister also confirmed Ottawa’s readiness to continue supporting Ukraine’s recovery and reconstruction, including strengthening energy security.

Earlier reports indicated that Canada is considering the deployment of its military personnel to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement. Prime Minister Mark Carney noted that the country’s initial contribution to security guarantees could include training Ukrainian troops.

In addition, at the end of last year, Carney announced an additional $2.5 billion in economic aid for Ukraine. Canada has also officially joined the European SAFE defense program worth €150 billion, which provides access to joint arms procurement.
