The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) demonstrated fragments of a Russian ballistic missile used by Russian forces to attack the Lviv region on the night of January 8–9, 2026. The strike is being classified as a war crime by the Security Service of Ukraine.

According to the investigation, law enforcement officers identified the location where the missile debris fell and seized its key components.

Preliminary information indicates that the recovered parts belong to the Russian Oreshnik missile system.

Among the identified components are:

  • A stabilization and guidance unit (essentially the missile's "brains");
  • Parts of the propulsion system;
  • Fragments of the orientation mechanism;
  • Nozzles from the separation stage platform, among others.

All fragments have been designated as physical evidence and are being prepared for transfer for in-depth examinations.

The Security Service of Ukraine noted that the use of this missile against civilian infrastructure in Ukraine constitutes a war crime by Russia.

According to preliminary data, the launch of the medium-range ground-to-ground missile was carried out from the Russian Kapustin Yar test site.

"By attacking civilian facilities of our state near the border with the European Union, the Kremlin sought to destroy the region's life-support infrastructure amid a sharp deterioration in weather conditions," the statement said.

The Security Service of Ukraine is currently investigating all circumstances of the attack, as well as the individuals involved in its organization and execution, to hold them accountable.

Oreshnik strike on Lviv region

A series of explosions was heard in the Lviv region last night, following reports that Russia had launched missiles from the Kapustin Yar test site in the Arkhangelsk region.

After that, local authorities reported a strike on a critical infrastructure facility and a partial shutdown of gas supply.

Later, the Air Command West reported that the ballistic missile used to strike the Lviv region was flying at a speed of about 13,000 kilometers per hour, and that its type will be determined after all its elements are examined.

Russia rushed to confirm the launch of a ballistic missile at Lviv. At the same time, Russia cited a fake claim of an alleged attack on Putin's residence to justify another act of terror.
