Ukrainian drones hit Russia's Izhevsk Kupol over 1,300 kilometers away, sources

Early on July 1, long-range drones from the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) struck the Izhevsk Electromechanical Plant Kupol. The plant produces surface-to-air missile systems and drones for the Russian military. The distance to the target exceeded 1,300 kilometers.
According to RBC-Ukraine sources, the strike hit the production and storage facilities at the plant, located in the Russian Republic of Udmurtia. At least two hits were recorded, resulting in a fire breaking out.
Kupol manufactures the Tor and Osa surface-to-air missile systems and develops strike drones of the Garpiya type. The plant is under international sanctions for supplying Russia's military-industrial complex.
"The Security Service of Ukraine continues to deliver strikes with surgical precision on Russian defense industry enterprises supporting the war against Ukraine. Each special operation reduces the enemy's offensive potential, disrupts military production chains, and demonstrates that even deep inside Russia, there are no safe zones for its military infrastructure," a source told RBC-Ukraine.
Attack on the Kupol plant in Russia
Today, Russia reported an alleged drone attack on the city of Izhevsk. Explosions were heard near the Kupol Electromechanical Plant.
The Kupol Electromechanical Plant has been targeted by drones before. Similar attacks were reported in November 2024.
The plant specializes in producing the Tor missile systems, radar systems, and other military equipment components.
Izhevsk is the capital of Russia's Udmurtia region in the central part of the country. The city is known for its military, machinery, and metallurgy industries. The AK-47 assault rifle is also produced there.
Kupol is considered one of Russia's key defense plants. Besides the Tor systems, it manufactures the Saman-M1 and Adjutant target training complexes. The plant also produces gyroscopes, nanomaterials, and equipment for the nuclear power, oil, and food industries, specifically conveyor lines for liquor factories.
In September 2024, it was revealed that Kupol began serial production of the new long-range attack drone Garpiya-A1, based on a Chinese engine.
Explosions also occurred on the night of July 1 in the Russian cities of Saratov and Engels. Several airports were temporarily closed.
