Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha plans to visit Hungary amid growing tensions between the two countries, Sky News reports.

According to the outlet, Sybiha will visit Hungary this week.

Sky News recalls that relations between Budapest and Kyiv have been strained over conflicts regarding minority rights in Ukraine.

Hungary also receives the majority of its energy supplies from Russia and has refused to supply weapons to Ukraine.

Additionally, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has firmly opposed Ukraine’s EU membership.

Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó confirmed Sybiha’s visit and his meeting in Budapest.

"Will meet Andrii Sybiha in Budapest this week to discuss Hungarian-Ukrainian relations. We believe in dialogue and are always ready for talks. But the ball is on Ukraine’s side: real progress is only possible if rights taken from Hungarians in Transcarpathia are fully restored," he wrote on Twitter (X).

Tense relations between Ukraine and Hungary

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has taken a pro-Russian stance since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine. Hungary blocks aid to Kyiv and refuses to support sanctions against Russia.

Budapest also blocks Ukraine’s accession to the European Union.

According to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Hungary’s position seems especially strange given that even Russia has effectively come to terms with Ukraine’s European integration.

Meanwhile, Budapest has stated that it does not care about Moscow’s stance and will continue to block Ukraine’s EU membership.

At the same time, Orbán has claimed that Hungary is not an anti-Ukrainian state and wants a future for Ukraine. He also believes that discussions on security guarantees for Ukraine should take place with Russia, not the United States.

Hungary is also angered by Ukrainian strikes on the Druzhba oil pipeline. Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó described the attacks on Druzhba as an alleged attempt on his country’s energy security.
