Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban claims that his country is not anti-Ukrainian and wants a future for Ukraine, according to Index.

During a speech in Kecse, Viktor Orban touched on the topic of the Russian-Ukrainian war. In particular, he shared his view of the goals of the parties involved in the conflict.

According to him, Russia wants to halt westward expansion, while Ukraine seeks to preserve financial aid and avoid economic collapse.

At the same time, Orban claimed that the EU’s goal is to sustain the war to strengthen its position as a great power, while the US aims to reach a deal and economically subordinate the European Union to America.

The Hungarian prime minister also said the EU is acting during the war like a "lame duck," adding that the bloc should negotiate security arrangements not with the US but with Russia.

Orban gave another comment on Hungary and Ukraine:

"We don’t want to push Ukraine into nowhere; we are not anti-Ukrainian. We want a future for Ukraine, because the collapse of a neighboring country is not in our interest either," he said, adding that prolonging the war is a losing strategy.

Hungary and 'sticks in wheels' for Ukraine

Despite his rhetoric, Orban’s policies and approach hardly demonstrate pro-Ukrainian support and often benefit Russia. Budapest has repeatedly blocked aid to Kyiv or sanctions against Moscow.

Recently, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine has fulfilled all requirements for EU accession, but the process is being blocked by Hungary. He added that this looks particularly strange given that even Russia has effectively come to terms with Ukraine’s European integration.

"Finally, we hear a signal from Russia that they already accept Ukraine’s EU membership. It’s a pity they grasp reality with such a delay. Since 2013, Russia has been moving toward this simple thought, but now it must also be heard by some of Russia’s big friends in Europe. If even Putin does not object anymore, then the positions of certain countries, especially Hungary, on the negotiation clusters look truly strange," Zelenskyy noted.
